Job Description

Python Developer – Central London / Hybrid Remote working

Paying up to £90,000 depending on experience, plus benefits listed at the bottom of this advert

Role Overview:

A highly regarded investment manager is seeing year-on-year growth and a big investment in their technology capabilities and is looking to hire a Python Engineer within one of the development teams.

The Development team this role is joining, is responsible for their Jupyter Notebook platform, which is used for research and to automate business processes.

As a Software Engineer, you will be working in a team alongside the tech lead and will be responsible for helping define and implement the strategic vision for the Jupyter Notebook platform. This will involve stabilising the existing setup, devising the long-term strategy for the platform, and implementing the governance process for notebook development and testing. Some of this will involve improving the platform, designing new features, creating and delivering PoC’s, optimising the performance of the centralised development environment hosted in Kubernetes, plus more.

Further work will also include looking into and then introducing the use of Machine Learning and NLP.

The role also involves working closely with internal teams, including the Research team, to help them develop and debug notebooks supporting business-critical functions. It may involve working with relevant external service providers as well as experimenting with new tools introduced on the Jupyter platform.

Key Tasks:


Propose, design and implement new features and functionality on the existing platform to enable it to better support the needs of the business, such as debuggable notebooks and improved code reuse through code shared between notebooks, etc


Propose plans to improve the architecture of the current Jupyter platform, de-coupling it from systems as applicable and onboarding more users to it while providing training and documentation as required


Design and implement a Notebook testing framework


Support the Research team on notebook development, and guiding on relevant best practices


Agree and implement a governance process with business users for ensuring robust testing (incl. load testing) is performed in the UAT environment before notebooks are productionized


Keep systems up to date, upgrading required platforms and decommissioning systems/integrations no longer needed


Lead from the front in investigating, running POCs and presenting new Notebook tools to stakeholders

Skills, Knowledge & Experience:


1 – 4 years of relevant development experience working with Python


If you have experience with Jupyter notebooks and / or working in the Financial services sector then this is beneficial but not essential


Experience of close collaboration with agile development teams


A strong focus on business outcomes


Understanding how IT operations are managed


Ability to use a wide variety of open source and proprietary technologies and tools
